![]() The beauty of this is that, rather than eating dinner in a rather bland hotel restaurant, you can walk from your hotel to one of the pubs in the village (both the Kings Arms and the White Horse are worth a visit). (Photo: Moshrunners )The location of this hotel is also more pleasant than you would expect as it is also only a five-minute walk to Longford village, which is probably the nicest residential area within easy access of the airport. The Thistle is the only hotel at Heathrow Airport where you can travel to the terminal in one of these automated driverless pods. Pods cost £6 (which is added to your hotel bill) and most people who stay here agree that the pods are what make the Thistle their preferred Heathrow hotel. It is 1.6km (1 mile) from Terminal 5 and while you can walk to the terminal in around 25 minutes most people take one of the automated pods and the Thistle is the only hotel at Heathrow Airport that is served by driverless pods (you can’t even ride the pods if you stay at the Premier Inn across the road). The hotel is one of the closest hotels to Terminal 5 (although the Sofitel is a lot closer). It is probably also the best located of the Heathrow Airport hotels that are not located immediately adjacent to any of the terminals. While certain aspects of the hotel are starting to look a little tired, it is clean and is of better value than a lot of other hotels close to the airport. The restaurant serves burgers, steak, sandwiches, pub classics and it also has a prix fixe menu. The Runway View is a step up from the Oak & Avocado Lounge, and not just because it is upstairs, and it is worth a visit for the fantastic runway views from the rooftop terrace. The Oak & Avocado Lounge looks exactly as you would expect but I’m sure they do a great smashed avo on toast. The hotel has two restaurant/bar areas: the dreadfully-named Oak & Avocado Lounge and the Runway View Restaurant. However, staff are friendly and the hotel is reasonably priced. It is hardly the most modern hotel at Heathrow Airport and some furnishings look like they haven’t been updated since the 1980s. The hotel’s 266 guest rooms are all air-conditioned and have comfortable beds, a work desk, a flatscreen television, ironing facilities, tea and coffee making facilities and newly renovated bathrooms. The Thistle is a sprawling two-storey building with no lift. It is a good option if you’re travelling from Terminal 5 (that is if you’re flying British Airways or Iberia) and once at Terminal 5 it is quick and easy to catch a free connecting train to one of the other terminals.
